TOPIC: SHANGHAI AIRLINES Updated: 28JUL2010MR

SHANGHAI AIRLINES EXIT FROM STAR ALLIANCE

Q: Why is Shanghai Airlines leaving Star Alliance?
A: China Eastern Airlines has announced that it will join the SkyTeam Alliance. As Shanghai
Airlines has recently merged with China Eastern Airlines, they have taken the strategic
decision to leave Star Alliance.

Q: When will Shanghai Airlines leave Star Alliance?
A: 31 October 2010.

Q: How will this impact the services currently provided by the alliance?
A: Star Alliance and its member carriers will continue to offer a comprehensive network
serving Shanghai and China. After FM’s exit our offer still exceeds that of competing
alliances. The alliance together with Air China is exploring options to secure a wider
presence in the region.
Mainland China (including Hong Kong) to Europe vv:
Star Alliance: 316 weekly frequencies / 5 Chinese destinations
Oneworld: 228 weekly frequencies / 3 Chinese destinations
SkyTeam: 211 weekly frequencies / 7 Chinese destinations
Mainland China (including Hong Kong) to North America vv:
Star Alliance: 286 weekly frequencies / 3 Chinese destinations
Oneworld: 159 weekly frequencies / 3 Chinese destinations
SkyTeam: 41 weekly frequencies / 4 Chinese destinations
Mainland China (including Hong Kong) to Rest of Asia vv:
Star Alliance: 1,741 weekly frequencies / 31 Chinese destinations
Oneworld: 1,199 weekly frequencies / 7 Chinese destinations
SkyTeam: 1,094 weekly frequencies / 31 Chinese destinations

Q: Star Alliance will now have a hole to fill in its service to China. What is being planned in
that regard?
A: We are exploring our options and working with our member, Air China, to ensure the
network and customer benefits are safeguarded.

Q: How strong is Star Alliance in the region with its remaining members?
A: Air China will continue to represent Star Alliance in Shanghai and China. A significant
number of Star Alliance member carriers already operate into Shanghai and Mainland
China: AC, CA, CO, LH, LX, MS, NH, NZ, OS, OZ, SA, SK, SQ, TG, TK, UA.

Q: What are the changes to the Star Alliance network – overall and specifically in the
affected region – short, medium and long-term?
A: We do not expect material changes to the network. We are working with Air China to fill
the void to be left by Shanghai Airlines.

Q: Are the other Star Alliance member carriers looking at adding capacity into the market?
A: Our member carriers are presently evaluation various options on what short term capacity
increases are feasible.

CUSTOMER BENEFITS – TICKETED PASSENGERS
Q: What will happen to customers who are ticketed on Shanghai Airlines but flying with
another Star Alliance carrier? What will happen to customer who are ticketed on another
Star Alliance carrier but flying on Shanghai Airlines?

have agreed to mutually accept all tickets issued before 31 October 2010. Hence
customers can travel as booked.

Q: What about customers holding a Round the World fare ticket, or any of the other alliance
fare products, e.g. China Airpass, North Asia Airpass, , Asia Airpass, etc.?
A: Tickets issued prior to 31 October 2010 for travel after that date where Shanghai Airlines
is a carrier on one or more sectors in the itinerary will continue to be valid subject to the
terms and conditions on which those tickets were issued.

Q: What about mileage redemption tickets?

CUSTOMER BENEFITS – FFP
Q: What about customers who are members of Shanghai Airlines frequent flyer programme?
Are their points and status still honoured at the other member carriers?
A: All Shanghai Airlines Crane Club members who had a redemption ticket issued prior to 31
October 2010 for flights on Star Alliance carriers prior to or after 31 October can travel on
these flights as booked.
Crane Club Gold and Silver Card holders will continue to enjoy the Star Alliance Gold and
Silver benefits until 31 October 2010.

Q: Does the Shanghai Airlines FFP continue to function? Can customers transfer their Crane
Club points to another carrier’s FFP? What about existing status?
A: Questions pertaining directly to the Crane Club FFP should be addressed to Shanghai
Airlines directly.
The transfer of miles and status to other FFP programmes within Star Alliance is
unfortunately not possible; same goes for status.

Q: What will happen to partner FFP members who have redemption tickets on Shanghai
Airlines flights after 31 October?
A: Redemption tickets issued on Shanghai Airlines prior to 31 October will be accepted by
Shanghai Airlines even if the flights are after their exit from Star Alliance.

Q. Would partner FFP members still be able to accrue and redeem miles on Shanghai
Airlines flights?
A. All Star Alliance member carriers’ FFP members will be able to accrue and redeem miles
up to 31October. Mileage accrual and redemption on Shanghai Airlines flights after
31October will be subject to bilateral contracts between Shanghai Airlines and individual
member carriers. Therefore, customers should contact their FFP customer service to get
specific information for their programme.

A: All Star Alliance elite level benefits for Star Alliance Gold and Silver members –including
lounge access for Gold level members - will still be provided until 31 October 2010.

Q: How many lounges will Star Alliance lose in its network, following Shanghai’s withdrawal?
A: The number of lounges in the Star Alliance network continues to increase despite the
withdrawal of Shanghai Airlines. Although Shanghai Airlines does operate the lounge
used by Star Alliance at Shanghai’s Pudong Airport. At present various options are being
considered in order to ensure uninterrupted access to lounge facilities for customers after
31 October 2010. Additionally, beyond their withdrawal, some Shanghai Airlines-operated
lounges may continue to be accessible via bilateral agreements between Star Alliance
members and Shanghai Airlines; consult with your operating carrier.

OTHER BENEFITS
Q: What are the alliance and its member carriers doing to protect customer interests?
A: The member carriers have agreed to give customers this advance notice of the
termination in order to give them time to confirm their travel plans. Members of Crane
Club FFP will continue to enjoy alliance benefits until
31 October 2010, at which time the programme’s relationship with Star Alliance ends
